Shirley Lake Trail is suitable for hikers about age 12 and older. The hike begins at the end of Squaw Peak Road and leads up Shirley Canyon to Shirley Lake. The 4.5 miles round trip hike requires the hiker to be committed to the adventure, which takes on average 2-3 hours or longer, depending on the number of stops made along the way. The journey is rewarded with sights of waterfalls in the summer months, and swimming areas are available along the way-but be advised-snow runoff is quite cold. There is also the option to climb to the top of High Camp, and then take the tram back down and enjoy the brilliant views of Olympic Valley and Alpine Meadows.
Hikers should inquire with local sport shops in spring months about the current amount of snowfall left on the trail to determine whether snowshoes or other preparations are necessary. Shirley Lake Trail is dog friendly.
