Are you looking for fun winter activities that the whole family can take part in? Here are some indoor and outdoor favorites. For a full list or more ideas, check out our Things to Do Guide (which you can sort by season) and our Event Calendar.
Sledding: There is a great little sledding hill just outside Tahoe City across from 64 Acres. It's free and you have to bring your own sled, but it's the perfect place to spend an afternoon with the family. To get there, go through Tahoe City and take West Lake Boulevard towards the West Shore. Right after Bank of the West, you'll see cars parked on the left-hand side of the road. This is where the hill is, so if you get to Tahoe Tavern or Tahoe House Restaurant, you've gone too far!
Ice Skating: While there are several ice skating rinks around North Lake Tahoe, there is nothing quite like ice skating on a real frozen lake or pond. When the weather gets really cold up here, and the snow is a bit scarce, locals pull out their skates and head to Boca Reservoir, spots along the Truckee River, or even shallow spots along Lake Tahoe*. If the weather isn't exactly cooperating for ice skating, Northstar California has a great ice skating rink that is open daily from 1-8 pm. The rink is free is and rentals are available for $5. It's also surrounded by lounge areas with fire pits, making it the perfect place for drinking hot chocolate and roasting s'mores! *Please use caution when ice skating on a natural pond, river, or lake and check conditions before venturing out onto the ice.
Dog Sledding: Wilderness Adventure Dog Sled Tours offers both daytime and sunset dog sled rides at the Resort at Squaw Creek, and up at Sugar Bowl. They also offer a 2.5 hour "expedition" where you can learn how to mush your own dog-sled team. For more information call (530) 550-8813.
Bowling: Avoid cabin fever on a stormy day and head to Bowl Incline. They offer sixteen lanes, five pool tables, and an arcade. For more information on reserving lanes and operating hours, call (775) 831-1900.
