Lake Tahoe Estate Offered for Sale;
Home of San Francisco Philanthropist & Descendent of Dollar Steamship Line, et al.

TAHOE CITY, Calif. (Friday, July 12, 2013) – The Lake Tahoe estate of San Francisco philanthropist and businesswoman Diana Dollar Hickingbotham Knowles is listed for sale, offered at $9,495,000.

Well-known for her support to the arts within San Francisco and environmental support at Lake Tahoe, Mrs. Knowles passed away in March of 2013.

She was the daughter of Robert Stanley Dollar and granddaughter of Robert Dollar, widely known as “Captain” Robert Dollar, who founded many international businesses including the Michigan-based British Canadian Lumber Company in the late 1800s.  Soon after, Dollar and family moved to California (with offices in San Francisco and residences in Marin County), where he began to recognize the need to transport lumber; and subsequently purchased his first cargo ship. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Dollar and family founded and operated some of the world’s most influential shipping businesses, including the Pacific Mail Steamship, Dollar Steamship Line, and President Ocean Liners.  The building at 311 California Street (and the location of Dollar’s original offices) is known today as the Robert Dollar Building.

A business tycoon herself, Mrs. Knowles continued her family’s legacy, eventually becoming President of the Robert Dollar Company until the age of 72.

Mrs. Knowles’ Meeks Bay lakefront estate, which is located along Lake Tahoe’s pristine west shore, includes more than two acres of land, more than 400 feet of waterfront, private pier and boathouse, and 180-degree views of the water and its surrounding Sierra Nevada peaks.

“She was prolific in her support of the arts, culture, and the environment in the Bay and Tahoe,” said Bill Dietz of Tahoe Luxury Properties.  “Mrs. Knowles is a tangible connection to our state’s past, as well as to early global business; and to walk through the Meeks Bay estate is much like walking through history,” he added.  “The home, like its owner, is very special and extremely significant.”
